FREE CALCULATOR
What would your screen time cost?
Enter your daily screen time, the free time you would allow yourself and a price per minute. The result is the virtual rent RentYourTime would show you. It works in your browser, with no account.
- Over your allowance
- 20m a day
- Per day
- $2.00
- Per week
- $14.00
- Per month
- $60.83
- Per year
- $730.00
In a year that is 121h 40m past your allowance. All your screen time adds up to 35.5 full days a year.
THE MATHS
How this is calculated.
Take your screen time and subtract your free allowance: what is left is the time past your allowance. Multiply those minutes by your rate, and you have the rent for one day. Inside the allowance the rent is zero.
rent per day = (screen time − free allowance) × rate per minute
Example: 2h 20m of screen time with a 2h 00m allowance is 20m over. At $0.10 a minute that is $2.00 a day, $14.00 a week, $60.83 a month and $730.00 a year.
What the calculator assumes
- Every day looks like the one you entered. Real days vary, so read the result as a scale, not a forecast.
- A week is 7 days, a year is 365 days and a month is an average month: 365 ÷ 12, about 30.4 days.
- The day is rounded to whole cents first; the week, month and year are multiples of that day.
- The limits are the app’s own settings: an allowance from 15m to 10h 00m a day and a rate from $0.05 to $5.00 a minute.
- Amounts are shown in US dollars. The rent is virtual: RentYourTime shows it and never charges it.
What is virtual rent?
Virtual rent is the price RentYourTime puts on screen time past a daily allowance you choose. It is calculated per minute at a rate you set, shown on a live meter and on a daily receipt, and never charged. Its job is to make extra time feel like a cost while you can still decide to stop.
