HOW IT WORKS
How RentYourTime works.
You set a free daily allowance for your screen time and a price per minute. Past the allowance, every minute adds virtual rent to the day’s bill. The rent is never charged, but you see it.
STEP BY STEP
Five steps, from setup to receipt.
- 01
Set your free time
Choose how much screen time you want each day, from 15m to 10h 00m. That allowance is always free.
- 02
Name your price
Choose what a minute past your allowance costs, from $0.05 to $5.00. You can change the allowance and the rate later in the settings.
- 03
Watch the meter
The app meters your screen time on your phone. While you are inside your allowance, it shows how much free time is left.
- 04
Past the allowance, rent adds up
Every extra minute adds virtual rent to the day’s bill: minutes over, times your rate. Nothing is blocked, and nothing is charged.
- 05
Read the receipt, keep the streak
The daily receipt itemises the day: time used, free allowance, billable time and the total. Each day inside your allowance extends your streak.
AN EXAMPLE
One day with RentYourTime.
A sample day with the app’s starting settings. The numbers are an illustration, not anyone’s data.
- Once
Two choices in onboarding
You pick 2h 00m of free screen time a day and a rate of $0.10 a minute. These are the app’s starting values; both are yours to change.
- During the day
The meter keeps count
By the evening you have used your 2h 00m. Up to here the day has cost nothing.
- The evening
The trade-off shows up
You keep scrolling for another 27m. The running bill goes up by $0.10 with every minute, while you are deciding whether to continue.
- End of day
The receipt
27m over at $0.10 a minute is $2.70 of virtual rent. Tomorrow starts at zero: stay inside the allowance and the day goes on your streak.
WHY IT HELPS
The problem: a total you can ignore.
Your phone already tells you how long you were on it, and a figure like “4h 12m” is easy to shrug off. RentYourTime turns the time past your own limit into a price, shown while you are still deciding whether to keep going.
Tracking it by hand
- Open your phone’s screen-time report after the fact.
- Compare the total with a limit you keep in your head.
- Work out what the extra time was worth, if you bother.
- Remember how yesterday and last week went.
With RentYourTime
- The meter counts while you use the phone.
- Your allowance is set once and shown as free time left.
- The rent is calculated for you, minute by minute.
- The receipt, the streak and the weekly overview keep the record.
